Romania’s net coal production totaled, in the first 11 months of last year, 4.093 million tonnes of oil equivalent (toe), by 6.3% (274,900 toe) lower compared to that in the similar period of 2013, according to the data centralized by the National Statistics Institute (INS).
In the said period, Romania imported 442,200 net coal toe, down by 92,000 toe (17.2%) compared to the imports in the first 11 months of 2013.
According to Romania’s draft 2015-2035 Energy Strategy, the total production capacity of lignite amounts to some 33 million tonnes per year, whilst domestic consumption of lignite stands at some 23 million tonnes per year, which means a production over-capacity of approximately 10 million tonnes per year.
According to Agerpres,in opposition to lignite, the national pit coal production does not cover the domestic demand and thus imports are necessary.
