Former Directorate for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) head Alina Bica made a series of surprising statements before magistrates on Wednesday. Among them, she launched a series of attacks against DNA Chief Prosecutor Laura Codruta Kovesi.
Bica allegedly stated that her only fault in the Bica 1 case, the one concerning ANRP’s restitutions, was “her friendship with a certain lady,” according to enational.ro. She did not name names, however the assumption is that the person concerned is Elena Udrea, the one photographed alongside Bica in Paris during the presidential elections campaign.
Alina Bica claimed that as a consequence of this friendship she is only a victim of the war between her friend and Florian Coldea, the current interim director of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI). She accused Coldea of trying to control DIICOT investigations and of intervening with the heads of that institution in order to obtain a favourable court decision for businessman Ovidiu Tender.
“Coldea asked me to intervene for Tender. He wanted a suspended sentence for him. I explained to him that the case is very well organized and that acquittal is not possible,” Alina Bica stated.
Nevertheless, magistrates consider that Alina Bica’s accusations are baseless, the documents showing that she sent Tender’s case to a different prosecutor before a decision being taken and, moreover, the new prosecutor allegedly followed precisely the steps mentioned by Alina Bica.
Businessman Ovidiu Tender recently stated that he was glad to see Alina Bica arrested. “If you recall, she had offered to arrest me,” he said. Likewise, Alina Bica complained that her office was bugged, that she received numerous threats and that Florian Coldea along with National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) Director Laura Codruta Kovesi allegedly framed her in several cases. Bica accuses Tender of filing a false denunciation against her and of becoming part of the game started by Coldea and Kovesi in return for obtaining a lowering of the sentence he received in the RAFO Onesti case, namely 11 years and four months in jail.
Bica also stated that she allegedly saw Dorin Cocos twice, in meetings attended by dozens of other persons and, because of this, she even asked to be confronted with the three beneficiaries from this case, a request denied by the Superior Court magistrates. Likewise, she said she does not know businessman Gheorghe Stelian.
Alina Bica attacked the arrest measure and asked to be placed under house arrest or under judicial control.
The former head of DIICOT has been placed under preventive arrest in a case in which she is accused of active and passive bribery and which concerns the benefits she allegedly received in order to help certain businessmen that were under investigation.
