President Klaus Iohannis approves Adriean Videanu’s prosecution

Former Economy Minister Adriean Videanu can be prosecuted in the Romgaz-Interagro case. He is charged with being an accessory to malfeasance in office and embezzlement. President Klaus Iohannis approved yesterday the request filed by the General Prosecutor’s Office. According to the Presidential Administration, Iohannis has forwarded the prosecutors’ request to the Justice Ministry.

Adriean Videanu was Economy Minister from 2008 to 2010, and is now accused of being an accessory to malfeasance in office and embezzlement. Adriean Videanu is prosecuted in two cases. In the Romgaz-Interagro case he is defendant alongside former Economy Minister Varujan Vosganian. According to prosecutors, the two approved, signed and supported within the government six orders and three memoranda meant to serve the financial interests of the crime group set up by businessman Ioan Niculae and they used SNGN Romgaz SA, a strategic national company, for the private benefit of Interagro SA, a company owned by Niculae.

In the second case, one in which former Department for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) Director Alina Bica is also involved, Adriean Videanu is charged with being an accessory to abuse and was placed under 30-day preventive arrest at the end of January, the measure being ordered by the Supreme Court.
