President Iohannis congratulates Italian counterpart Sergio Mattarella

President Klaus Iohannis had a telephonic conversation, on Thursday, with his Italian counterpart Sergio Mattarella, during which the Romanian head of state congratulated the Italian President “for his election as President of Italy and expressed his wish to deepen the Strategic Partnership between the two countries that is built on a long and solid relationship”.

According to a press release of the Presidential Administration remitted on Thursday to Agerpres, the two have emphasized that “the presence of an important Romanian community in Italy and a strong Italian business community in Romania adds a special dimension to this relation”.

“The President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, has mentioned that one of his immediate priorities is to meet the representatives of the Romanian community in Italy and that he wishes to find new ways to harness the common interests of Romanians and Italians, citizens with equal rights in Europe”, the quoted release also shows.

The new President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, took the oath of office on Tuesday in front of the Parliament for a seven-year mandate after being elected to serve on Saturday by MPs and regional representatives.

Mattarella, aged 73, thus becomes the 12th President of Italy after the Second World War.
