The Romanian Athletics Federation’s Board took an unanimous decision at its Friday meeting to name former Olympic field-and-track champion Gabriela Szabo as Romania’s candidate in the elections for the European Athletics Association (EAA) Board on a proposal of Federation chief Ion Sandu. The elections for the new Board of the continental body are due in Bled, Slovenia on April 10-11, reports Agerpres.
After the vote in the Federal Board, Szabo, an incumbent Minister of Youth and Sport and a former three time world champion said: ‘I am glad the Romanian Athletics Federation has decided to give me the honour of representing Romania in the highest decision-making body of European athletics. In the future term as a member of the European Athletics Association’s Board I plan to contribute to the development of athletics on a European level, both by sensitizing the decision-makers and by proposing programmes to raise the awareness of the public at large’.
‘Athletics is a traditional sport in Romania and we, as former athletes have the duty to back it and contribute to its development’, said Szabo, who is currently a member of the EAA Board too.
