The weather station at Intorsura Buzaului (north-east of the capital) recorded minus 26.7 degrees Celsius Wednesday morning, the lowest temperature in Romania.
The lowest temperature this year was minus 34.6 Celsius and it was recorded at Intorsura Buzaului (the central Covasna county) as well on Jan. 8.
The lowest temperature officially recorded in the last half-century in the county of Covasna was minus 35.8 Celsius on Feb. 8, 2005, also at Intorsura Buzaului; such subfreezing temperature had not hit since 1939.
Subfreezing temperatures also hit Joseni, the central Harghita county early Wednesday, at minus 24.4 Celsius, marking a February record-low in that county.
The all-time low temperature in Harghita in February was registered in 1987, at Miercurea Ciuc, when the thermometer showed minus 35.2 Celsius.
