Ex-Minister Laszlo Borbely’s prosecution debated ‘with celerity’

The Standing Bureau of the Chamber of Deputies on Monday sent the prosecutor general’s request for the prosecution of Laszlo Borbely to the Legal Committee, Chamber Secretary Nicolae Mircovici said, noting that ‘debate with celerity’ had been requested.

‘The prosecutor general’s request for the prosecution of Laszlo Borbely has been sent to the Legal Committee. The Regulation sets not deadline for prosecution, there is one of three days for a detention request and one of five days for a preventive arrest request. The Legal Committee has been asked to deal with the matter with celerity’, Mircovici said.

Influence peddling accusation

The National Anti-corruption Directorate (DNA)  last week asked the Chamber of Deputies to approve the prosecution of UDMR MP Laszlo Borbely, ex-Minister of Environment, in the case where he is suspected of taking bribe in order to help companies be awarded contracts, case that has been recently re-opened by DNA Oradea.

The request for the approval of prosecution was filed following suspicions that, in 2011, Laszlo Borbely, at the time Minister of Environment and Forests, received from Ioan Ciocan, manager of SC Lescaci Com SRL Negreşti Oaş, undue benefits worth RON 80,952 consisting in the renovation and equipment of an apartment, in exchange for him using his influence on workers of the ‘Apele Romane’ National Administration (ANAR), in order to make them favour the company in the course of tendering procedures organised by the local basin administrations.

Borbely is also suspected that, in 2011, he received from Anton Petru Molnar, actual manager of SC Azimut Com SRL Acăţari, undue benefits worth RON 112,199 consisting of the remodelling and extension of one of his properties, in exchange for him intervening with ANAR officials to convince them to help the company in the process of tendering procedures organised by the local basin administrations.

Also in 011, Laszlo Borbely allegedly received from the manager of two companies the sum of EUR 50,000 for helping the companies managed by them obtain water management contracts and cash the value of works performed.

PSD and PNL want to lift his immunity

UDMR MP Laszlo Borbely could lose his immunity from prosecution as a member of Parliament and be facing the DNA prosecutors by the end of this week. After the Senate scandal in the Vosganian case, both PSD and PNL said they would vote for Borbely’s prosecution.
