Following his several critical positions against Victor Ponta and Liviu Dragnea, MEP Catalin Ivan has been replaced as President of District 1 organization of PSD and, Tuesday night, a decision was made to also suspend him from the party for 12 months. Ivan said he would challenge the sanction in the Bucharest District 1 Court as, in the meantime, he had moved to the PSD Organization of Iasi. Catalin Ivan also said the decision made by the Social-Democrats in District 1 was against the statute, as he was not present at the meeting where his suspension was decided.
‘There is a state of desperation in the leadership and a fear of challengers at the congress’
Catalin Ivan announced at the beginning of the year his intention to run for president of the party during the Social Democratic Party (PSD) congress, criticizing Liviu Dragnea and Victor Ponta. The PSD Women Organization asked that C. Ivan should be expelled from party, but the decision was not formally made.
‘At the level of the district organization pressure began to mount so that they should write a formal paper to expel me. I told them I would move to another party organization, there is a report confirming that. I am no longer a member of the District 1 organization. The District 1 organization received order from Bucharest, they were assigned a task. They received order from Ecaterina Andronescu, probably she wants to run for the National Council and needs Dragnea and Ponta’s support so she wants to make herself useful now. By that, they are obtaining one thing – my prevention from running for office at the congress. This is what they are actually after. It’s their only stake. There is a state of desperation in the leadership and a fear of challengers at the congress. There are clear anti-democratic derailments, there is no more internal democracy n PSD, you are no longer allowed to speak or to stand for election. But neither can Victor Ponta and Liviu Dragnea remain at the helm of the party for too long’, Catalin Ivan told ‘Gandul’.
He added that he had moved to another organization of PSD ‘trying to escape the abuse of the current leadership’.
Ecaterina Andronescu: I have never ordered any sanctions against Ivan
The President of the PSD Bucharest Organization, Ecaterina Andronescu, said what Ivan had said was not true and that she had never ordered any sanctions against the MEP.
‘I have spoken to him and he has confirmed to me that he has moved to the Dobrovat organization’, Ecaterina Andronescu said, adding that she had not made a decision whether or not she would run for president of the PSD National Council.
Mircea Geoana and Marian Vanghelie were expelled from the party last year.
According to Gandul, all the members who have joined the new party Mircea Geoana will set up will be also expelled.
