Gigi Becali, released from prison on parole

Businessman George Becali has been released from prison on parole, through a decision announced on Friday by the Constanta Court.

The court’s sentence is final, reports Agerpres.

The pronouncement on releasing Becali on parole was postponed to Friday after on March 31 the court considered the contestation of anti-corruption prosecutors against the Medgidia Court’s decision to admit the release of the businessman.

On March 6, the magistrates of Medgidia Court decided to release George Becali on parole, but the sentence was contested by anti-corruption prosecutors.

Sentenced to imprisonment in 2013, George Becali was transferred, on request, from Jilava Prison to Poarta Alba, where he had an open regime.

Becali was sentenced to three and a half years’ imprisonment after receiving three years behind bars in the case of land exchange with the Ministry of Defence, to which were added another six months from the sentence in the “Suitcase” case.
