Former minister Darius Valcov admits to receiving EUR 1.5 M bribe

Former Finance Minister Darius Valcov admitted during the hearings to receiving a EUR 1.5 M bribe from businessman Theodor Berna in exchange of influencing the awarding of public work contracts to his company Tehnologica Radion SRL, the DNA report on the basis of which the former minister’s arrest was requested in a new case shows, Agerpres informs.

“Likewise, the defendant pointed out that he received the sum of EUR 1.5 M, starting in 2011, through defendant Prina Minel Florin, public administrator at the Slatina Mayoralty, the latter also establishing the way the money was to be paid. At the same time, the defendant claims that he knew from Prina Minel Florin, Ramba Andrei Ovidiu and Susala Lucian Petrut that a part of the money was also remitted through the Plus Confort SRL company,” the report shows.

Supreme Court (ICCJ)  judges decided last week to place the former Finance Minister under preventive arrest in the case in which he is accused of allegedly intervening, as Slatina Mayor, in awarding contracts to Berna. Valcov spent 23 days under preventive arrest.

According to the DNA, in 2009 Theodor Berna, the administrator of Tehnologica Radion, contacted Slatina Mayor Darius Valcov, proposing him 20 per cent of the value of the sums collected  as a result of winning public work tenders in Slatina, Scornicesti, Piatra Olt and Draganesti. In exchange, Valcov was to influence decision-making factors in order for the tenders to be won by Berna. The Supreme Court decided on Wednesday that the former Finance Minister will be investigated under preventive arrest in this case. The decision is final.

He allegedly “squealed” on Liviu Dragnea

Investigative journalist Silviu Manastire revealed on B1TV that former Finance Minister Darius Valcov allegedly squealed on two PSD heavy-weights. According to the judicial sources invoked by Manastire, PSD Executive President Liviu Dragnea is one of them. County Council Chairman Paul Stanescu is the second possible “victim” of the alleged criminal complaints signed by the PSD Senator.

According to Silviu Manastire, Valcov’s arrest is only the beginning of a long series of court cases that will decimate politicians in Oltenia. Likewise, the investigative journalist claims that Liviu Dragnea, PSD’s number two man, was the one who “transferred” Darius Valcov to PSD in 2012 and the one who backed the Senator for the office of Public Finance Minister.

Charged with influence peddling, Darius Valcov, former Slatina Mayor (2004-2012) and ex-Minister of Finance until last month, was arrested at the end of last week for 23 days, after the High Court admitted the appeals filed by anti-corruption prosecutors against the house arrest measure.
