DNA freezes assets belonging to Marian Vanghelie and Oana Niculescu Mizil

District 5’s suspended mayor Marian Vanghelie was taken by police van to the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) for hearings on Thursday. Vanghelie was placed under preventive arrest on March 14, being accused of malfeasance in office, passive bribery and money laundering. Also on Thursday, his lover Oana Niculescu MIzil and her lawyer arrived at the DNA for hearings.

The former District 5 mayor, suspended from office on March 28, is accused of taking a EUR 90 M bribe in exchange for awarding public work contracts to the companies of businessman Marin Dumitru. According to the DNA prosecutors, Vanghelie received a “commission” of approximately 20 per cent of the value of contracts awarded by the District 5 Mayoralty.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court approved the DNA’s request for a 30-day extension of the preventive arrest measure taken against former District 5 Mayor Marian Vanghelie. The decision is not final.

Oana Niculescu Mizil is prosecuted for engaging in financial operations incompatible with the office of MP. She is accused of managing a commercial company. Mizil denies the accusations.

At the end of the hearings, the two defendants’ lawyers stated that their assets have been frozen. According to Marian Vanghelie’s lawyer, the assets concerned consist of two apartments and one auto vehicle.

“There are no bank accounts. What are we talking about? Properties and a car that Mr. Vanghelie sold to his brother. I don’t know the source of the information concerning EUR 90 M. I don’t know where this EUR 90 M sum is coming from, it’s not real. When we find out more I promise I will inform you. There are two apartments belonging to Mr. Vanghelie. We will take a decision in 3 days’ time. Mrs. Mizil has no asset on her name, it was simply a formality, she was notified. No statements are given at this stage,” Marian Vanghelie’s lawyer stated.

On the other hand, Oana Mizil’s lawyer stated that the prosecutors are investigating the case, the distraint measure being taken for the time being.

“Distraint was placed on the assets of the defendants concerned. We are talking about the fact that Mrs. Oana Mizil and Mr. Marian Vanghelie were notified today that their assets have been frozen because there is the suspicion of alleged damages,” the former MP’s lawyer stated.
