Kelemen Hunor defends Miercurea Ciuc Mayor and Deputy Mayor

Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) President Kelemen Hunor (photo) expressed his solidarity with Raduly Robert and Szoke Domokos, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Miercurea Ciuc, who are investigated for malfeasance in office while under house arrest. Kelemen Hunor stated that the Union protests against the “harassment” of the two and expresses its confidence in their innocence.

“The Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania expresses its solidarity with the leaders of local public administration in the Miercurea Ciuc municipality, Raduly Robert and Szoke Domokos, both being people very devoted and committed to their activity in the interest of the local community,” the UDMR President states in a communiqué.

He states that the party he represents has confidence in the innocence of the two. “We protest against the harassment of our colleagues, we have confidence in their innocence and in the fact that the Prosecutor’s Office will complete as soon as possible the procedure it started against them. Contrary to media rumors, the National Anticorruption Directorate does not suspect Raduly Robert and Szoke Domokos of passive bribery, that is why UDMR is waiting for clarifications in this regard as soon as possible, being of the opinion that the presumption of innocence is applicable in the case of our colleagues too,” the UDMR President added according to the aforementioned communiqué.

The Bucharest Court decided on Thursday to investigate Miercurea Ciuc Mayor Robert-Kalman Raduly and Deputy Mayor Domokos Szoke while placing them under 30-day house arrest. The court rejected the DNA prosecutors’ requests to place the two under preventive arrest, however it decided that Robert-Kalman Raduly and Domokos Szoke should be placed under house arrest.

According to a DNA communiqué, Mayor Robert Raduly was detained for malfeasance in office, two counts of passive bribery, instigating malfeasance in office and conflict of interests, while Deputy Mayor Domokos Szoke is accused of malfeasance in office, 4 counts of passive bribery and instigating the forgery of official documents.
