Head of Olt Court arraigned for passive bribery

National Anticorruption Directorate(DNA) prosecutors have arraigned Carmen Marinescu, the suspended head of the Olt Court, accusing her of taking hundreds of thousands of Euros as bribe in exchange for releasing from jail underworld member Sandu Anghel (also known as Bercea Mondial).

Carmen Marinescu, who is currently under preventive arrest, will be put on trial for passive bribery, influence peddling, money laundering (5 counts) and false statements (4 counts), a report authored by the anticorruption prosecutors shows.

Likewise, Iulius Severus Marinescu was arraigned for five counts of money laundering. Lawyer Dumitru Cismaru will also be arraigned, being charged with being an accessory to passive bribery, influence peddling, and being an accessory to money laundering (4 counts).

Carmen Marinescu was placed under preventive arrest on March 24, following a decision taken by the Craiova Court of Appeals. Marinescu had been detained by DNA Craiova investigators the day before and the criminal prosecution subsequently started against her.

Investigators claim that the magistrate asked for and received EUR 200,000 from a person that became the denouncer in the case. The magistrate received the money through lawyer Dumitru Cismaru, her godson.

In exchange for the money, Carmen Marinescu decided to release from preventive arrest a defendant who was a member of the denouncer’s family.

Although the official document does not point out the defendant’s name, news channels have stated that the document refers to underworld member Sandu Anghel.
