Prosecutors of the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) have apprehended Solomon Wigler, personal advisor of Bucharest Mayor Sorin Oprescu. Wigler was caught in the act of receiving 25,000 euros on Wednesday night.
According to Mediafax, the advisor took 204,000 euro bribe promising in return to convince Bucharest city councillors to authorise to approve authorization and municipal development plans.
Wigler now faces charges of influence peddling.
According to DNA, Wigler Solomon asked for 230,000 euro in total from a businessman, in order for the Bucharest Municipality to approve the zone urban plans for the construction of three supermarkets in Bucharest as well as for the Municipality to make a donation.
Wigler Solomon received a total of 150,000 euro in four instalments, before and after the adoption of the needed decisions. One of the bribes – 50,000 euro – was received in the advisor’s own office on the 14th floor of the General Municipality.
In dealing with the case, the prosecutors received the specialised support of the Romanian Intelligence Service.
Wigler Solomon was taken into custody for 24 hours and was arraigned in Court, at the Bucharest Tribunal, with a proposed 30-day preventive arrest warrant.
Sorin Oprescu instantly suspends advisor
After Wigler Solomon had been arrested following the investigation of the anti-corruption prosecutors, Bucharest Mayor Sorin Oprescu suspended him, according to a release of the Bucharest Municipality issued on Thursday.
‘The Bucharest Municipality has and is making available to the criminal investigation bodies all the information and documents required by those. The Mayor of the City of Bucharest took the necessary measures under the applicable legislation, and suspended Mr. Solomon Wigler as advisor’, the quoted source notes.
Wigler Solomon owns two houses, an apartment, watches, jewellery and works of art with a total value of EUR 1.9 M, as well as three BMW and Audi vehicles, according to Mediafax who quotes his 2013 asset disclosure available online on the website of the Bucharest Municipality.
