The Senate’s vote in the case concerning PSD Senator Dan Sova, whose immunity anticorruption prosecutors have asked to be lifted in order for him to be detained, has very clearly shown the MPs’ stance toward the fight against corruption. Despite the fact that PSD was declaratively willing to vote in favour of all requests sent by prosecutors to Parliament, including arrest requests, this was contradicted every time by the votes cast in the legislative forum. Thus, the approval of the request to detain and place Dan Sova under preventive arrest was rejected for the second time after PSD, PLR, PC and UNPR voted against the prosecutors’ request, while PNL voted openly. 13 of PNL’s 61 Senators were absent, the Liberals arguing that the plenum meeting was convened in six hours’ time and they were abroad. PSD, PC, PLR and UDMR however offered the votes needed in order to reject the prosecutors’ request, gandul.info informs.
72 Senators voted in favour of rejecting the DNA prosecutors’ request to approve the detention and preventive arrest, while 66 voted in favour of approving it.
‘Gandul’ journalists identified 31 of the Senators that voted against the prosecutors’ request. As expected, most of them are from PSD. The Senators that were filmed by ‘Gandul’ journalists voting against the DNA request are: Calin Popescu Tariceanu (PLR), Anghel Cristiana (PC), Arcas Viorel (PSD), Bodog Florian (PSD), Bota Marius (PSD), Bujor Dumitru (PSD), Butunoi Ionel (PSD), Chelaru Ioan (PSD), Corlatean Titus (PSD), Costoiu Mihnea (PSD), Dontu Ovidiu (PSD), Pop Liviu (PSD), Durut Aurel (PSD), Durbaca Eugen (PC), Filip Petru (PSD), Fratean Alexandru (PSD), Firea Gabriela (PSD), Isaila Marius (PSD), Jipa Ruxandra (PSD0, Klarik Attila (UDMR), Mocanu Victor (PSD), Nita Mihai (PC), Pavel Marian (PSD), Pop Gheorghe (PSD), Popa Constantin (UNPR), Purec Ion (PSD), Sarbu Ilie (PSD), Rogojan Ciprian (UNPR), Sova Dan (PSD), Toma Ion (UNPR), Nicolae Moga (PSD).
PNL analyses absence of Liberals
Following the vote, the Liberals stated that they are preparing to attack the voting procedure at the Constitutional Court and that they will also analyse the way in which the opposition mobilized.
Analysis shows that if all Liberals had been present at the Senate on Tuesday then there would have been high chances of seeing the prosecutors’ arrest request approved. According to the PNL leadership, the only justified absence was that of Anca Boagiu, who is abroad.
“Indeed, PNL had several absentees, but I wouldn’t put it like that, I would point out that Senator Dan Sova was defended by PSD Senators. A number of 72 Senators voted against the request. If another 4 votes would go from the 72 to the 66 then the number of voters in favour of approving the request would be higher,” PNL Senator Mario Oprea stated.
The 10 Liberal Senators that helped Dan Sova avoid arrest, through their absence, are: Crin Antonescu, Anca Boagiu, Cristian Bodea, Gigi Chiru, Iulian Dumitrescu, Mihaela Popa, Corneliu Popescu, Dian Popescu, Viorel Grigoras and Cristian Florian. Of them, only Gigi Chiru and Dian Popescu have legal problems of their own.
