Baccalaureate 2015 kicks off. A quarter of high school graduates have not signed up

Almost 170,000 young people have signed up to sit the baccalaureate exam in the summer session. Education Minister Sorin Campeanu said there were 7,000 more candidates than in the summer of 2014, but, still one in four high school graduates is not sitting the exam this time. The Education official also said that, out of the 187,000 12th grade students in this school year, 43,000 (23%) had not signed up for the Baccalaureate. Some of them did not pass their finals, did not complete the 12th grade or are ill, but many simply chose not to take the exam.

On the other hand, only 7% of the candidates who failed the previous years will try again this year, according to the minister.

‘We have 340,000 graduates without a diploma. Of those, 25,000 have signed up this year. That seems worrying to me’, Education Minister Sorin Campeanu told the public television TVR.

In addition, the official said he didn’t want ‘the topics in the National Evaluation or Baccalaureate to be traps for candidates. For that, I will do everything that I can as a minister, everything I am allowed to do under the law, to make sure this promise is kept’.

The first exam took place on Monday, 8 June – the oral exam in the Romanian Language, where only qualifiers are given, which means that no one can fail. The exams will last for three days (8 – 10 June).

From June 10 to June 12 there will be the exams assessing native language oral communication competences (task B) and the evaluation of digital competences (task D) from June 15 to June 19.

The series of oral exams will end with the evaluation of knowledge in a foreign language (task C), scheduled to take place from June 22 to June 26.

The written exams are beginning on Monday, 29 June, with the Romanian language and literature.

Beginning this year, the members of the exam board must check by random sampling the video recordings in the exam rooms after each written exam. A new element this year is that approximately 5% of the exam rooms will be equipped with video and audio recording capabilities.
