Major names at Sibiu International Theatre Festival

Three of the top contemporary directors present their shows at the 2015 Sibiu International Theatre Festival. These directors are Joel Pommerat, with the show “Cinderella”, Olivier Py with the show “Towards Happiness” and Armin Petras with two performances: “The Visit of the Old Lady” and “The Five Mornings”, the press release sent to Hotnews.ro announces. The 22nd edition of FITS is held during June 12 – 21.

Joel Pommerat is one of the honorary guests of this edition, at the end of which he will receive a star on Celebrity Alley, as sign of acknowledgment for his outstanding contribution to the art of theatre. A director who only produces his own plays, due to the belief that directing and text are elaborated during rehearsals, Joel Pommerat seeks to create visual theatre, simultaneously intimate and spectacular. For the performance “The Reunification of the Two Koreas”, presented at FITS 2013, he won the Beaumarchais / Le Figaro Prize for Best Author, the Prize for Best Performance at Palmarès du Théâtre and the Prize for Best Directing of a Performance in French Language. In 2015, he won the award for Best World Creation at the International Opera Awards for his work “Au monde”.

This year, Joel Pommerat presents in Sibiu the performance “Cinderella”, a co-production of Theatre National de la communaute francaise de Belgique and La Monnaie/De Munt, with two performances: one on Friday, June 12, starting at 9:00 pm and and one on Saturday, June 13, at 8 pm, in the Sports’ Hall of the “Octavian Goga” National College. Due to great Belgian group of actors, his very lucid writing style and cinema-like set design, approaching an esthetics defined by the use of darkness – which already seems like a signature of the director after his previous works “Le Petit Chaperon Rouge” and “Pinocchio” – Joel Pommerat manages to enhance the story with realism, without diminishing any of its charm. Enjoying massive success during the last seasons, “Cinderella” is an adequate performance for grownups and children alike, captivating anyone who refuses to choose between the monotonous reality of adult world and the spirit of children.

Teatro de la Abadia, one of Spain’s most important theatres, presents at ‘FITS 2015 the performance “Towards Happiness”, a production created as part of the project “Cities on stage” attended as a partner by Theatre “Radu Stanca” in Sibiu, too. The text and directing are signed by Olivier Py, actor, director and manager of the Avignon International Theatre Festival. A man – played by Pedro Casablanc – wakes up in the middle of the night, troubled by a feeling that determines him to dress up and to wander the streets of the city. His inner monologue is accompanied by a suggestive series of objects and shadows, as well as by Fernando Velazquez’s live music. Velazquez has written many soundtracks (“Ocho apellidos vascos”, “The Impossible”). The two performances will be held on Thursday, June 18, at 10 pm, and on Friday, June 19, at 4 pm, at BRD New Stage.

Armin Petras, one of the most important contemporary directors, is present in Sibiu with one of the two performances produced by Schauspiel Stuttgart, the theatre he has been leading since last season: “The Visit of the Old Lady” and “The Five Mornings” prepares these days in Sibiu the premiere of the show “Nathan The Wise”, a co-production of TNRS and Schauspiel Stuttgart.

With a prestigious directing career in German and international theatres, Armin Petras has been the manager of the Theatre in Leipzig, and now, of Schauspiel Frankfurt. The show “The Visit of the Old Lady” by Friedrich Durrenmatt, a co-production by Schauspiel Stuttgart and by Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin will take place on Sunday, June 14, at 9 pm, at the Grand Hall of the Unions’ Culture House.

Armin Petras writes plays under the pseudonym Fritz Kater and has authored the text of the performance “The Five Mornings”. Fritz Kater has placed the plot of the play “The Five Mornings”, during a catastrophy. The city is shattered with panic. Should it be caused by an explosion? Or a radioactive contamination? A dangerous virus? A feeling of exhaustion of the entire society? Nobody knows. It seems that the responsibility cannot be placed upon no foreign force. It is a powerful performance, scheduled for Wednesday, June 17, at 9 PM, at the Studio Hall of TNRS.

The performance “Nathan the Wise”, after Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, is the result of one of the greatest co-production projects initiated by the “Radu Stanca” Theatre in Sibiu together with the National Theatre in Stuttgart. The project will not be limited to a mere mise-en-stage of the theatre play, but it also has concrete purposes: to reveal the social dimension of terrorism and, most of all, of racism in these two countries. The cast of the show includes internationally acclaimed actors at world level, such as Ofelia Popii, the winner of several major awards in Romania, Scotland (Edinburgh) and Japan (Tokyo), Peter Kurth and Katharina Knap, two of the actors of the Stuttgart Theatre, who won this year the titles of Actor of the Year and, respectively, Debuting Actress of the Year in Germany. The premiere of the show will take place on June 15, 2015, at 10 pm, in the TNRS Hall, at the International Theatre Festival in Sibiu, and later, there will be the premiere at Schauspiel Stuttgart, at the beginning of 2016, and a series of performances at the National Theatre of Oslo.
