Former president’s nephew Dragos Basescu brought with a warrant to Anticorruption Directorate

Dragos Basescu, the nephew of former President Traian Basescu, was brought with a warrant on Wednesday morning to the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) headquarters.

Dragos Basescu is the son of Mircea Basescu, the brother of the former head of state.

According to confidential judiciary sources, Dragos Basescu is a suspect of influence peddling, after he has allegedly asked a businessman for one million euro, with help from an accessory, in return to assist the businessman in solving his legal issues in a criminal case handled by prosecutor Remus Jurj of the Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT).

The businessman in case is Sandu Staicu; DIICOT has asked his arrest by a court.

The aforementioned sources allege that Dragos Basescu has originally asked for 500,000 euros to prevent the arrest of Staicu, following the appeal by the DIICOT, and 500,000 euros more for lifting the seizure of Staicu’s property.

The money was to be dissimulated in a sham consultancy contract with an international company.
