The Romanian Foundation for Democracy, in collaboration with the Romanian Royal Family and the “George Enescu” Philharmonic, organizes the visit to Romania of His Excellency Dr. Vytautas Landsbergis, the first democratic President of Lithuania, professor at the Music Conservatory in Vilnius. Thus, on Wednesday, at 6.30 p.m., the Romanian Athenaeum will host the “Intellectual Elites in Eastern Europe: From Anti-communist Dissidence to Euro-Atlantic Integration” debate in the form of a dialogue between Prof. Emil Constantinescu, President of Romania from 1996 to 2000, and Prof. Vytautas Landsbergis. Outstanding personalities from the Romanian world of academia and ambassadors of EU member states are invited to take part in the event.
Also on Wednesday, at 11 a.m., the National Music University in Bucharest will confer its Doctor Honoris Causa title to Professor Landsbergis.
His Majesty King Michael I will grant the Grand Cross of the Order of the Crown of Romania to President Vytautas Landsbergis in a ceremony at Peles Castle on June 25.
Vytautas Landsbergis is the founder of the Sajudis Movement for the Independence of Lithuania from the former USSR, a movement that played a crucial role in the clashes between the backers of Lithuania’s independence and KGB’s repression troops at the national television station in Vilnius. He was Speaker of the Lithuanian Parliament in 1996-2000 and member of the European Parliament in 2004-2009.
