Anti-corruption prosecutors raid residence of businessman Niculae and his company Interagro

Prosecutors with the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) are conducting a search today at the residence of jailed businessman Ioan Nicolae and the registered offices of his Interagro company, judiciary sources have told Agerpres.

The sources say the damage in this case would exceed 2 million euros.

They say the search is taking place at Niculae’s residence in Zimnicea generically known as the Fatana Domain (hunting lodge); his residence in Busteni and former domicile in District 1 of Bucharest City, currently belonging to Adina Elena Niculae, as well as the registered office and outlet of Intervitt SRL – Zimnicea, the registered office of his Interagro SA company in Bucharest and the Interagro outlet in Zimnicea.

Prosecutors with the National Anticorruption Authority (DNA) are conducting today 11 domiciliary visits in locations in Bucharest City and the counties of Teleorman and Prahova in a corruption and economic crime case.

“Prosecutors with the DNA department in charge with combatting offences similar to corruption are conducting an investigation into a criminal case involving suspicions over the commission of corruption and economic fraud offences (tax evasion and money laundering) in 2008-2009. On July 23, following the award of the legal warrants from the competent court, domiciliary visits are being conducted in 11 locations in Bucharest City as well as the counties of Teleorman and Prahova that are registered offices of commercial companies and homes of individuals,” DNA reports in a press statement released on Thursday.

For their mission, the prosecutors enjoy specialist support of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) and the Special Intervention Brigade of the Romanian Gendarmerie.

Businessman Niculae is currently serving two years and six months in prison under a sentence issued on him this April by the Bucharest Court of Appeal in a case called “Bribing at the Social Democrat Party (PSD).”
