Newly elected PSD interim chairman Dragnea reaffirms party’s support for PM Ponta

Recently elected interim chairman of the Social Democratic Party (PSD, major at rule) Liviu Dragnea on Saturday told a press conference in Baia Mare that he and the party throw their entire support behind Premier Victor Ponta.

“I have no issue with justice (…), I don’t know if it’s a trump or a vulnerability, it’s just that the party was in a situation where I was asked to step in, and I couldn’t do otherwise but take action, because I would have lived my life long with the regret that at the moment my intervention was required and I could have helped, I didn’t do it out of fear or cowardice (…) I assumed all the risks. It’s hard to say if the court trial I stood is an asset or a vulnerability, it is really is hard to say (…), it’s about getting sentenced for get-out-the-vote canvassing, yet I don’t want to comment the decision of the court; it’s just that it caused great distress among party members and outside the party as well. But ultimately, what’s really important is that we can rebuild and settle the party on solid ground. I further back Victor Ponta, I assured him of the party’s entire support and I hope he can better see to the Government, now that he has freed his mind of the party issues. I think that balancing these two jobs was very hard, and we hope that starting this September we will sort out things in Parliament too,” Liviu Dragnea said, according to Agerpres.

PSD interim chairman Liviu Dragnea and PSD Secretary general Andrei Dolineaschi attended on Saturday the Satu Mare County elective conference of the party.
