Bucharest District 4 Mayor Cristian Popescu-Piedone will be a candidate of the National Union for the Progress of Romania (UNPR) in the local election next year. The information was confirmed by political sources to Agerpres on Thursday.
Cristian Popescu-Piedone said on Wednesday that he could not find himself in ALDE and that ‘in Romanian politics there have to be a left and a right working together in the best national interest and for the consolidation of the rule of law’.
‘Before the PC – PLR merger I made an announcement, choosing to resign all offices I had at the time in PC and continuing as a regular party member. After the merger, I was amazed to see that I was the Prime Vice-President of ALDE although, as it is already known, I did not agree to the act itself and I did not go to the Congress. I cannot find myself in ALDE!’ said Piedone.
‘I thank President Daniel Constantin for our cooperation in PC, but I was a PC candidate in USL. Now I can see that, with this merger, neither exists’. Piedone also said the dissolution of PC left a big void in Romanian politics and thanks the founding president, Dan Voiculescu, for his trust. ‘I thank him and would like to assure him that I would be a member if the party still existed’, Piedone added.
Asked what he was planning to do about the local election, the mayor of District 4 gave an evasive answer:
‘I wish my colleagues who chose ALDE a lot of success, assuring them of my entire respect, but I choose Romania. I believe in Romanian politics there have to be a left and a right working together in the best national interest and for the consolidation of the rule of law. So many political wars are holding Romania back.
Asked if he would join UNPR, Piedone said he and Gabriel Oprea were good friends and that he would make the announcement in the autumn, after the holiday.
‘I and Gabriel Oprea share a beautiful friendship. Now I say I pursue the national interest. When I’m back from holiday – meaning after 15 September – I will announce where I will be a candidate in order to eliminate all speculations concerning me. The announcement I will make regarding my candidacy will not disappoint the residents of District 4 whom I thank for their trust and to whom I will remain loyal’, said the mayor.
