Farmers ask Agriculture Ministry to offset drought damage

The Pro Agro National Federation on Friday called on the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for support to set up a state-aid scheme to offset the 2015 drought damage taken by vegetable farmers.

The scheme should be implemented urgently, according to Pro Agro representatives, so that the necessary cash may be paid out in a reasonable amount time to allow farmers to resume the production cycle.

This year’s yields of wheat, maize, rape and sunflower will be much smaller overall than in 2014 because of the drought, Chairman of the League of Associations of Romania’s Agricultural Producers (LAPAR) Laurentiu Baciu told Agerpres.

As for the claims to be extended to farmers, Agriculture Minister Daniel Constantin said that in the case of amounts higher than 15,000 euros, Romania will have to ask the European Commission for approval, while for smaller amounts it will have to notify the commission, even when the claims are paid from the national budget. “For small farmers, we can set up the de minimis aid without the approval of the commission,’ Constantin explained.
