Foreign capital in Romania – over EUR 41.4 bln

According to the statistics published by the National Trade Registry Office (ONRC), since 1990 the value of foreign capital invested in Romanian commercial companies totals EUR 41.415 bln. The value of foreign capital on June 30 this year was smaller by EUR 115 M compared to the one registered on 31 December 2014. In other words, foreign investors either withdrew from Romania or lowered their exposure on the Romanian market in the last six months.

From the point of view of the number of foreign capital commercial companies, Italy tops the rankings, Italian capital being present in 40,746 companies registered at the ONRC. Italian capital is followed by German capital which can be found in 20,866 companies.

This is the “beautiful” side of the statistical data. The surprising side is that the value of the Italian and German capital invested in Romania is rather low. German capital is 3rd (only EUR 4.6 bln invested in Romania in the last 25 years) and Italian capital is 7th (EUR 1.5 bln).

Most foreign capital invested in Romania has the Netherlands as a country of origin (EUR 8.2 bln invested in 4,696 companies with Dutch capital). Austria is second with EUR 4.7 bln invested, followed by Germany, Cyprus (EUR 3.5 bln), France (EUR 2.4 bln), Greece, Italy, Spain and Luxembourg (over EUR 1 bln each). The capital invested by United Kingdom, United States and Switzerland did not go above EUR 1 bln.
