7.6 million lei for improving detention in several penitentiaries

Administration of the Penitentiaries has earmarked 7.6 million lei to improve the detention conditions in several penitentiaries; the money was assigned when operating this year’s first budget amendment.

The funds are aimed at carrying out maintenance and current repair works as well as procuring the bed sets and various inventory objects (beds, mattresses, cans for carrying food etc.) that the persons in custody need, the National Administration said in a release to Agerpres on Tuesday.

“In 2015, the programme for improving the detention conditions started in March, when the National Administration of the Penitentiaries was allotted two million lei in additional funds from the Budget Reserve Fund in order to carry out maintenance/current repair works at four detention units and to achieve to pre-feasibility studies with a view to building two new penitentiaries in Caracal, Olt County and Berceni, Prahova County”, the release added.

The amounts given on the budget revision also allow the full payment of wage arrears to the personnel and the money for the equipment they are entitled to purchase this year.

“Improving the detention conditions is a constant priority for the Justice Ministry and the National Administration of the Penitentiaries, with the two institutions pursuing with the moves for being assigned additional funds so that all the penitentiaries might be included in the programme for improved detention by the end of the year”, the release said.
