In the early evening of August 5, 2015, the U.S. Senate confirmed Hans G. Klemm as the next ambassador to Romania, by voice vote. Klemm, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, is currently advisor to the State Department’s Under Secretary for Management, a position he has held since January 2015.
He was nominated to be the next U.S. ambassador to Romania on March 24. Romania is a “friend” and a “strategic partner” of the United States, Klemm declared during the hearings in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, assuming to consolidate the bilateral relations and to support anti-corruption efforts. Mark Gitenstein was the previous American ambassador to Romania. His term in office ended on 14 December 2012.
