Tennis: Simona Halep qualifies to round of 16 of Toronto WTA tournament

Romanian Simona Halep, WTA No. 3, has qualified to the round of sixteen of the the 2,377,305 dollars Rogers Cup WTA tournament in Toronto, by defeating Serbian Jelena Jankovic 6-3, 6-4 on Wednesday.

Second seed Halep (23 years old) needed one hour and 21 minutes to send Jankovic home and secure 25,380 dollars in prize money and 105 WTA points.

She was supported from the stands throughout the match by a group of fans waving Romanian flags and chanting her name.

In the next round, Halep will meet Angelique Kerber (Germany), WTA No. 13, who has won against Monica Puig (Puerto Rico) 6-2, 6-3.
