Record catch at Henri Coanda Airport: 36 kg of khat impounded from a Romanian national

Prosecutors with the Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) and officers of the Border Police Department at the Henri Coanda Airport of Bucharest and the Otopeni Customs Officer on Thursday apprehended a Romanian national as he was trying to smuggle into Romania 18 packets of nearly 36 kg of khat, a high-risk drug also known as African marijuana.

DIICOT reports that the drug was imported from Ethiopia. N.B., the Romanian national apprehended in this case, is being prosecuted for trafficking in high-risk drugs.

He was held for 24 hours on Thursday and was to be brought before the Bucharest Tribunal on Friday with a proposal to be placed on a 30-day preventive detention.
