Tennis: Halep claims Toronto WTA tournament semi-final spot, scores career 300th win

Romania’s Simona Halep claimed a spot in the semi-finals of the 2,377,305 dollars Toronto WTA tournament after defeating Agnieszka Radwanska (Poland) 0-6 6-3 6-1 in the quarterfinals on Friday.

WTA No. 3 Halep scored the 300th win of her professional career, the WTA stressed.

The 23-year-old Romanian, who won the game with the 6th-seeded Polish player after one hour and 40 minutes, had a weak start, however.

“At the beginning I could not move my legs. I felt very tired. I just kept focused on what I had to do and just tried to keep the ball in the court to make some longer rallies. She [Radwanska] played an amazing first set I couldn’t make anything but I am happy I could fight until the end. I knew I had to change tactics and keep the ball in the court. The fans kept supporting me even when I was being led 5-0 and this helped me fight”, said Halep, who is the second-seed of Canada competition.

Having made it to the Rogers Cup semi-finals has earned the Romanian 350 WTA points and 111,940 dollars in prize money.

Next up for Halep will be the winner of the quarter-final between 15th seed Sara Errani of Italy and Ukrainian qualifier Lesia Tsurenko.
