National Liberal Party (PNL) co-chair Alina Gorghiu draws the attention that in Romania over 1.7 million tonnes of food are thrown away each year and that this “huge waste” can be diminished through a legislative initiative proposed by her Liberal colleague Florin Alexe.
“Over 1.7 million tonnes of edible food are thrown away each year. Supermarkets and restaurants cannot sell products nearing the expiration date, even if they are still good for consumption. In order to diminish this huge waste, PNL Deputy Florin Alexe proposes a law through which traders should be made to direct these products to orphanages, residential care homes for the elderly or NGOs who help the needy,” Gorghiu wrote on Facebook on Sunday.
She added that the European Union encourages all countries to find solutions to reduce the quantity of edible food which is thrown away, taking into account that there are millions of people who could benefit from it.
The draft law is signed by several deputies from the PNL, the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania and the minorities’ group.
