Proposal to award National Order “Faithful Service” to police officer killed in line of duty referred to President

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Internal Affairs Gabriel Oprea on Friday referred to President Klaus Iohannis the proposal to award the National Order of “Faithful Service” in the rank ordinul national serviciu credinciosof Knight to police officer Gheorghe Ionescu, posthumously promoted to sub-inspector; Ionescu died from the severe injuries sustained in an accident occurred in the night of August 1, while he was acting in the line of duty.

“Deputy Prime Minister for national security, Minister of Internal Affairs Gabriel Oprea, referred today to President of Romania Mr. Klaus Iohannis the proposal to award the National Order of ‘Faithful Service’ in the rank of Knight to police officer Gheorghe Ionescu, posthumously promoted to sub-inspector, for heroic deeds and for having sacrificed his life in the line of duty,” reads a release of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to Agerpres.

The source says the Ministry of Internal Affairs will organize the military funeral for the hero police officer on Sunday, at the Ghencea III military cemetery.

The police officer died Friday morning at the Floreasca Emergency Hospital where he had been placed in induced coma after having sustained severe injuries in the night of August 1 to 2 in an accident caused by a DUI driver.

Turkish businessman Abdullah Atas disregarded Ionescu’s signalling to pull over, bumped the car into the officer and dragged him onto the car’s bonnet for 400 m. The officer then fell on the road surface.

Fallen on duty police sub-inspector Gheorghe Ionescu was 44 years old, married and had worked for 23 years with the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

PM Ponta conveys condolences to family of police officer killed in the line of duty

Prime Minister Victor Ponta sent on Friday a message of condolence to the family of police officer Gheorghe Ionescu, who died from the severe injuries sustained in an accident occurred on the night of August 1 to 2, while he was acting in the line of duty.

“Sincere condolences to the family! May God rest him in peace!”, the Premier wrote on Facebook.
