As many as 18 Romanian citizens are currently detained in Hungary on allegations of human trafficking, after another two were taken in custody in Szeged and Fejer, apart from the 16 people already detained on August 26 and 27, spokesperson of the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Raluca Lunculescu said on Friday.
“There was an accident on Hungary’s motorway M5. The driver involved in the accident is a Romanian citizen who was carrying several persons aboard; he was taken in custody and is being investigated for human trafficking. He was just slightly injured, and taken to hospital in the first phase; he was subsequently detained and put under investigation for human trafficking. There’s another case in Fejer, where a Romanian was also detained and is being investigated for human trafficking,” said Raluca Lunculescu.
She added that the driver involved in the accident on the M5 motorway is being detained in Szeged.
The Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson reminded that in the evening of August 26, four Romanian citizens were detained and put under investigation for human trafficking, and on August 27 another 12 were detained in the same city and are being investigated over similar charges.
On the other hand, Raluca Lunculescu also referred to the case in Austria, where over 70 refugees were found dead in a truck, emphasizing once again that the owner of the vehicle is not a Romanian citizen.
“This is confirmed information and was notified by the Austrian authorities; according to all the official information received from the Austrian side, no Romanian citizen was involved in this case,” said the Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson.
