Former President Basescu heard by prosecutors in threat and blackmail investigation

Former President Traian Basecu’s counselor Claudiu Dinu stated on Friday that his client does not fear justice and maintains his innocence as regards threatening Senator Gabriela Firea.

Basescu was heard for several hours at the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA). “There are acts of procedure, the case is following the legal procedure,” his lawyer explained, according to Agerpres.

Upon leaving the prosecutors’ offices, the former head of state told media, “I only did one simple thing. I am defending myself and will continue to defend myself. (…) It is a point of view, I have a different one.”

Senator Firea has filed a complaint against Basescu on April 16 2014, accusing the then-President of threats and blackmailing involved by his assertions in a TV broadcast. Basescu had warned Firea that “it would be better if she looked on her husband’s ‘estate’ where he is mayor, because she might not find him at home one day, if she’s not careful (…) I understand that in his parish plenty of bad things are happening.”

Gabriela Firea’s husband Florin Pandele is the mayor of the town of Voluntari, near Bucharest.
