Gov’t spokesperson: Romania doesn’t condition migrant quota acceptance on Schengen admission

Romania does not condition acceptance of the mandatory quotas of immigrants on the country’s joining the Schengen, but considers that “it would be fair” for it to be admitted to the border-free area with its air borders, Government spokesman Corneliu Calota (photo) told Agerpres..

“With regard to information according to which Bulgaria and Romania will condition the adoption of mandatory migrant allocation quotas among EU states on joining the Schengen Area, I can say that our country does not set a conditional relation between the two aspects, yet considers it would be fair to receive a positive response in October as regards its admission to the Schengen Area with the airport border check points,” Calota said.

Online newspaper EUobserver reports that a senior Bulgarian official confirmed that Bulgaria and Romania will condition the acceptance of migrant relocation quotas on the two countries’ entry into the Schengen Area.

Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister Rumyana Bachvarova said on Friday that her country would not trade its entry into Schengen for receiving refugees because these were two different issues, Xinhua reports.

“Bulgaria deserved to be in the visa-free Schengen area because the country has fulfilled all the technical requirements and its citizens have equal rights as other EU member countries,” Bachvarova said when addressing the 12th international conference Security in South-East Europe, Agerpres informs.
