Piedone credited with high chances in race for Bucharest City Hall

Bucharest’s District 4 Mayor Cristian Popescu Piedone, who recently joined UNPR, the party led by Deputy Premier Gabriel Oprea, tops the Bucharesters’ preferences for next year’s local elections, according to an Avangarde poll.
Piedone scores 49 per cent in the poll, followed by Robert Negoita (PSD, 43 per cent) and Ecaterina Andronescu (PSD, 42 per cent).
According to the poll, independent candidates register hardly negligible scores. Thus, Monica Macovei scores 28 per cent and Nicusor Dan 17 per cent. On the other hand, MEP Cristian Busoi, PNL’s most likely nominee for the Bucharest City Hall race in 2016, scores only 24 per cent, below his party’s opinion poll score.
Despite the fact that Bucharest Mayor Sorin Oprescu has been suspended, being placed under preventive arrest for passive bribery, he tops the Bucharesters’ preferences for the Bucharest City Hall as a PSD candidate, with 49 per cent. The result is however motivated by the fact that the poll was conducted before the corruption scandal in which he is involved.
Within the Liberal Party there is a neck-and-neck race between Cristian Busoi (27 per cent), Ludovic Orban (25 per cent) and Petre Roman (21 per cent).
The poll was conducted on September 1-7.
