PSD’s Dragnea: Executive Committee will discuss Monday preparations for Congress convention

The Executive Committee of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) convened for Monday will decide on the measures for the convention of the party’s Congress this October and discuss the situation following Prime Minister Victor Ponta having been sent to court, PSD interim national leader Liviu Dragnea said Saturday in Brasov.

He added that PSD finds itself in an unwanted situation, but the important thing is for the party to stay in power in order to carry through its political programme. Dragnea mentioned he wants Prime Minister Ponta to have what it takes to weather the current hard moments and feel the support of the party.

“The Government is, de jure and de facto, headed by Prime Minister Victor Ponta. This is an unwanted situation we find ourselves in as a party and the coalition, but first of all Victor Ponta. His decision will be important, but to PSD staying at rule is very important. (…) At the meeting of the Executive Committee convened for Monday we will discuss the current situation besides the organisational measures for the convention of the Congress, because it is normal for us to discuss it there as well; I believe PSD will continue its support for Ponta to stay the prime minister, because it is important for us to stay in power. (…) We need to talk this inside the ruling coalition as well. (…) I hope to talk to the prime minister today or tomorrow. (…) I do not ask where he is; I do not know where he is and it does not interest me that much; it is important for him to put order in his thoughts, to find the strength to weather well these very hard moments and feel that he can find support in the party. (…) We do not discuss plans B, based on some scenarios, but in line with the realities to be. (…) All I am saying is that PSD is not so small a party to be taken aback,” said Dragnea.

About the no-confidence motion the opposition National Liberal Party (PNL) has said it will table on Monday with Parliament and its request to the parties in power to back it, Dragnea said that cannot be a serious request.

Dragnea made his statements at a news conference on Saturday at the end of an extraordinary meeting of the PSD Brasov county branch, which passed a resolution voicing support for Dragnea to be elected the next national leader of PSD if Dragnea runs for office at the PSD Congress convention this October.
