Hans Klemm meets Parliament Speakers, praises Romania’s efforts to strengthen the rule of law and the fight against corruption

Hans Klemm, the new American Ambassador to Bucharest, met Senate Speaker Calin Popescu Tariceanu and Lower Chamber Speaker Valeriu Zgonea on Tuesday, the talks taking place just one day after the ambassador presented his letters of credence.

Senate Speaker counts on U.S. Ambassador’s support to attract American investments

At the end of his meeting with the American diplomat, Senate Speaker Calin Popescu Tariceanu stated that they talked about the consolidation of the strategic partnership, about Romania’s role in the region but also about the migrant crisis.
The two officials talked about the threats to Europe’s southern region, Tariceanu pointing out that the ambassador raised “a very straightforward question” about whether “Romanian authorities believe that the issue of the flow of refugees, which preoccupies the whole world but the EU in particular, is a consistent threat.”
“We discussed these issues with the conviction that each of our countries can bring an extremely useful contribution to a better world, a democratic and prosperous world,” Calin Popescu Tariceanu stated.
Likewise, the Senate Speaker also stated that during the talks he emphasized that Bucharest increasingly perceives “Russia’s aggressive policy,” the need to consolidate NATO’s eastern flank being invoked.
“Naturally, we talked about the threats that the NATO Alliance faces. I emphasized, unfortunately for us I could say, the way in which we increasingly perceive Russia’s aggressive policy and the need for the position we have shown lately to be the same, more precisely I believe that in what concerns countries such as Moldova and Ukraine their right to freely choose their political, social or economic development path should not be infringed by Russia or somebody else, we have to give them this possibility of making a free choice,” Tariceanu added.
Another issue tackled was the possibility of expanding the economic ties between Romania and the United States.
“We discussed the possibilities of expanding Romanian-American relations in the economic domain, considering the strong rebound of the American economy and, probably, the American investors’ higher appetite for investments abroad. During this period America’s economy is one of the best performing, posting the highest growth rates for a country of its size. Its unemployment has dropped significantly and, as I was saying, the companies’ resources and their desire to expand their activity in other geographic areas should be taken into account and I told the ambassador that we count on the influence and support he can offer in order to attract supplementary American investments in Romania, to the benefit of both countries,” Tariceanu stated after meeting US Ambassador Hans Klemm.
According to Tariceanu, the American Ambassador mentioned during the talks the Romanian soldiers recently wounded in Afghanistan and expressed his appreciation, “on behalf of the American people, for the sacrifices we have made in the theatres of operations, for the efforts we have shown throughout time in Iraq, in Afghanistan.”
The US Ambassador did not make any statements for the press.

Speaker Zgonea welcomes ambassador Klemm: Romania, US friend, strategic partner, ally

Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Valeriu Zgonea on Tuesday welcomed US Ambassador to Romania Hans Klemm, who praised Romania for its efforts to strengthen the rule of law and the fight against corruption.

In a press statement released to Agerpres on Tuesday, the two officials are said to have reviewed the main items on the bilateral agenda, underscoring the excellent level and privileges of the Romanian-American relationships that have been built and amplified around ideals, values and security, political and economic interests shared by the two nations.

Zgonea mentioned the special relations and partnership between Romania and the US and the 135th anniversary this year of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

“Romania is a friend, strategic partner and ally of the United States of America,” said Valeriu Zgonea.

He also showed interest in the development of the bilateral parliamentary dialogue that could have a significant contribution to the promotion of priorities of major interest, voicing hope that cooperation will amplify between the Pro America Group of Romania’s Parliament and the Pro Romania Caucus of the US Congress.

Also discussed were regional stability and security, particularly the latest developments in Romania’s vicinity.

Hans Klemm pointed to Romania’s key role in ensuring stability, security and prosperity in South-Eastern Europe, praising Romania for its efforts to strengthen the rule of law and the fight against corruption.

He said Romania is a staunch ally of NATO that has a significant contribution to world peace and security. Together with the US, he said, Romania has embraced democracy and it tries to ensure security and prosperity for its citizens in a Europe that is whole, free and at peace.
