President Iohannis acknowledges Romania’s problems, promises American investors further efforts to remedy

President Klaus Iohannis acknowledged in a meeting with American investors on Thursday that Romania has some issues with transparency and with fiscal and legislative predictability; he assured them the country is making efforts to remedy.

“Romania’s business environment has gradually improved. The increasing number of American companies present in Romania’s economy is a direct consequence of this fact. We are aware that some difficulties and problems persist. The preoccupation about the need of increasing transparency or fiscal and legislative predictability is completely legitimate; so is the need of prioritizing investments in sectors with huge growth potential. I assure you we are making efforts to remedy these issues and sharing efforts on this matter with investors will increase the effectiveness of the process. Attracting foreign investments is a fundamental priority to Romania,” the President declared at a meeting heading ‘Romania – an attractive destination for institutional investors’.

He mentioned the special investment potential of the Romanian capital market and pointed out that Romania intends to list more national companies at the stock exchange, hopefully making them attractive for American investors.

According to Iohannis, Romania has perspectives of becoming one of the most dynamic and liquid capital markets in Central and Eastern Europe. He also highlighted the significant potential of the energy industry, infrastructure, auto industry, IT and telecommunications, food industry, medical services and agriculture as investment targets.

The President invited the attending investors to explore fields like education, research, innovation, scientific and technological information exchanges; Romania can offer valuable engineers, IT expert, project pioneers and mathematicians.

The head of state emphasized the potential of the economic relations with the USA to reach the level of the security dimension which the Strategic Partnership between Romania and America is based on.

“Developing this economic dimension is one of my priorities. I noted with enthusiasm the doubling of the bilateral trade over the past five years, to more than two billion dollars in 2014. We hope this ascending trend continues, so that the United States become one of the main investors in Romania. I am fully confident in Romania’s potential of becoming a regional centre for American investments,” Iohannis asserted, according to Agerpres correspondent in New York.

According to him, Romania now has a stable and predictable economy.

President Klaus Iohannis is paying an official visit to New York, to attend the opening of the UN General Assembly. He took this opportunity to meet representatives of the American financial business, of banks and investment funds, and of institutional investors already present or possibly entering Romania’s capital market, as well as other businesspeople interested in the country’s investment potential. The context allowed laying the foundations of a good practices guide to prevent corruption in companies.
