President Iohannis meets China’s Xi Jinping, expresses interest in New Silk Road

President Klaus Iohannis met his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on Saturday in New York, the topics tackled concerning the economic and investment relations between Romania and China, particularly in sectors such as energy, infrastructure and tourism.
The meeting took place on the margins of the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment.
According to a communiqué issued by the Presidency, the two officials saluted the evolution and substance of Romanian-Chinese relations, both at bilateral level as well as in the wider framework of European Union – China relations and at international level.
At the bilateral level, the talks focused in particular on the deepening of the economic and investment cooperation between Romania and the People’s Republic of China. The main sectors taken into consideration for the implementation of ample projects are the energy, infrastructure and tourism sectors. Romania’s interest in the New Silk Road project was expressed on the occasion of this meeting.
The two high-level officials also tackled aspects concerning the cooperation between Romania and the People’s Republic of China within the UN. Both sides expressed interest in intensifying this collaboration, the Presidency’s communiqué shows.
