A bizarre figure:Number of employees reaches 6,060,000

A member of the Ponta Government has announced a bizarre piece of information yesterday: Romania currently has 6,060,000 employees and 5,137,162 retirees. That is what Social Dialogue Minister Liviu Pop stated.
Also presented were figures that showed that the number of employees has surpassed that of retirees. But the temporary surplus of employees was within reasonable limits running into the tens of thousands or a hundred thousand at most.
Here is what Liviu Pop also stated: “For the first time in many years the number of employees has surpassed that of retirees in Romania. Over 6,060,000 individual labour contracts are being currently paid; if we are to compare April 2012 to August 2015, we could say that over the last three years the Ponta Government has created 406,000 new jobs. In the context of the new Fiscal Code, we anticipate a rise in the number of employees in the following years. In fact, if we look at the situation of labour contracts over the last three years, we will see that when two important measures for the economy were adopted, namely lowering the social security contribution by 5 percentage points and lowering the VAT on foodstuffs, it all led to growth in the number of individual labour contracts, both fixed-term and continuous ones,” Pop said.
We are waiting for somewhat more reliable figures and data from the National Statistics Institute.
