Social Democrat Party (PSD) Senators Daniel Savu and Şerban Nicolae submitted their candidacies for the highest position in PSD on the last day candidacies were accepted. They will compete with Liviu Dragnea, who announced his intention to run on Sunday.
Interim party chairman Liviu Dragnea and Senators Serban Nicolae and Daniel Savu filed candidacies for president of the Social Democrat Party the chairman of the party’s Central Electoral Commission Florin Iordache announced on Tuesday.
“We have received from the PSD Central Electoral Commission three candidacies – it is about Messrs Liviu Dragnea, Serban Nicolae and Daniel Savu. We will examine the three candidacies till 5pm so as to observe what the National Executive Committee decided, namely a declaration on the candidate’s own responsibility, a recommendation from the county party branch and at least four recommendations from other county branches; we will complete such analysis later today and will present this report to the Executive Committee tomorrow [Wednesday] at 4pm and the Executive Committee will validate the candidacy for the internal elections of October 11”, Iordache said at the Palace of Parliament.
He explained that the rules call for a PSD county branch to give only one recommendation to a person seeking the party top position, but added that at Wednesday’s Executive Committee meeting it is possible that a deviation from such rules be accepted, if necessary.
The two candidates, however, do not enjoy too much support. Unlike Liviu Dragnea who has the support of 36 county organisations and five Bucharest district branches, as he said himself, Serban Nicolae is only endorsed by his own local organisation and Savu only by PSD Prahova.
The PSD National Executive Committee is meeting on Wednesday to validate the candidacies.
According to the CExN adopted criteria, Savu and Nicolae may be removed from the competition, as they do not have the support of a minimum of five county organisations.
The new PSD president will be elected by all the members of the party on Sunday, 11 October, and the extraordinary congress on 18 October will validate him/her and will elect the vice-presidents and the executive president.
