Gica Popescu conditionally released from prison. DNA to appeal decision

The District 4 Courthouse on Monday decided to conditionally release Gica Popescu from prison, but the magistrates’ decision is not final and will be challenged by the DNA prosecutors before the Bucharest Tribunal.
Gica Popescu is serving a three-year, one month and ten day custodial sentence at Jilava prison in the football transfer case.
The former footballer has already served half of his sentence and has written four books while in prison.
A DNA prosecutor said at the District 4 Courthouse on Monday that there was no evidence on file to show that the Jilava Prison conditional release board had prepared the characterisations in the Gheorghe Popescu case or that the books he had written while in prison were scientific works.
The Jilava prison conditional release board points out that Gheorghe Popescu had received a sentence totalling 1,137 days, of which he has served 570, plus 21 days calculated following the work the inmate has performed, meaning that he has fulfilled the required two thirds of the sentence to be considered for conditional release, according to Agerpres.
The characterisation on file further notes that Gheorghe Popescu has written and published a total of four scientific works from September 2014 to March 2015, but the titles of the books are not mentioned.
