Knesset Speaker visits Bucharest: Israel, a key partner of Romania in the Middle East

President Klaus Iohannis on Thursday welcomed visiting Speaker of the Israeli Parliament – Knesset Yuli-Yoel Edelstein, at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace, telling him that Israel is a key partner in the Middle East.

Romania-Israel:excellent relationship

The Presidential Administration reports that Iohannis and Edelstein exchanged opinions on the latest developments in the world, including the migration flows from the Middle East to Europe.

The two officials emphasised the excellent relationships between Romania and Israel.

“The two officials agreed that there is potential for a continuation in the development of bilateral relationships and also highlighted their mutual interest and determination to act for capitalising on this potential,” says the Presidential Administration.

It quotes Edelstein as saying Romania is the only country in its geographical area that has had uninterrupted diplomatic ties with Israel and that Romania is a pioneer as far as legislation condemning the Holocaust is concerned.

Knesset Speaker Edelstein is on an official visit to Romania until October 9.

Foreign Minister Aurescu, Knesset President hail excellent state of bilateral relation

Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu has met on Wednesday with Yuli-Yoel Edelstein, Speaker of the Israeli Knesset who is currently visiting Romania. The two officials mentioned the “excellent state” of the bilateral relation and expressed satisfaction with the intensity of the political, economic and sectorial dialogue.

“Both officials mentioned the substantial results of Romanian-Israeli inter-governmental meetings carried out so far and expressed their full willingness to continue the current positive dynamics of the bilateral relation. At the same time, the two officials showed interest in intensifying the bilateral dialogue between the Romanian Parliament and the Israeli Knesset”, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) informs in a press release sent to Agerpres.

Bogdan Aurescu added that Romania is ready to take on the “important responsibility” entailed by Romania’s taking over, next year, of the presidency of the International Holocaust Rememberance Alliance (IHRA) and expressed gratitude for the support Israel will give Romania in fulfilling the mandate.

“The two officials tackled issues relating to the developments in the Middle East, with a focus on the prospects of the Peace Process in the Middle East and the situation in Syria. Bogdan Aurescu presented the Romanian-Spanish project of the International Court for Combating Terrorism, received with interest by the interlocutor,” the Romanian diplomacy announced.

Senate Speaker Tariceanu advocates Romania’s intensified cooperation with Israeli partners

Senate Speaker Calin Popescu-Tariceanu advocated at a meeting this Wednesday with Knesset Speaker Yuli-Yoel Edelstein, who is on an official visit to Romania, an intensified cooperation between Romania and Israeli partners, particularly in IT, services, agriculture and high technology.

According to a Senate release to Agerpres, participating in the talks were Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Petru Filip, Chairman of the Parliament’s select Committee on Romania’s Schengen accession Titus Corlatean, the Secretary of the Romania – Israel Parliamentary Friendship Group Serban Nicolae, and Senators Marinica Dinca and Petru Ehegartner.

During the talks, Speaker Tariceanu praised the positive economic and social evolution of the State of Israel in the past 20 years, which set the prerequisites in place for an admirable economic development against the backdrop of the current global economic realities, and also expressed interest in the latest developments of the Israeli – Palestinian peace process, as well as in the current situation in the Middle Eastern, seen from the perspective of the Syrian conflict.

According to the cited source, Senator Titus Corlatean approached the subject of the migration to Europe of Middle Eastern refugees, seeking Israel’s opinion on the subject; he also tackled Romania – Israel parliamentary cooperation and the outlooks of thereof, with a view to supporting the peace process.

Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Petru Filip approached the Romania – Israeli cooperation from the perspective of the Israeli – Arab peace negotiations, expressing at the same time concerns over the latest developments in the Syrian conflict.

Knesset Speaker Yuli-Yoel Edelstein delivered a presentation of developments in his country, with focus on economy, industry, agriculture and services.

“Yuli-Yoel Edelstein made a presentation of the current situation in the Mideast, with focus on the peace process and the Syrian conflict from Israel’s perspective. In this context, he voiced his opinion that a sectoral Israeli – Arab cooperation in activity areas such as economy, industry, agriculture would be beneficial and go in advance of political cooperation, which requires more time to develop and turn concrete,” reads the Senate release.

The Knesset Speaker extended the Romanian side the invitation to pay an official visit to Israel in the near future.
