Bucharest caught between traffic jams and political jam

With a mayor who has been suspended on suspicion of bribery and an acting mayor whose appointment and skill are being challenged by many political parties, Bucharest suffers from jams caused by numerous irregularities on a daily basis. Their main cause is the break-down of the Traffic Management System which leads to the formation of incredible jams and bottlenecks along Bucharest’s main roads and junctions.
‘It hurts us that the traffic management system has broken down. We had a person there who was watching the cameras and give us information on jammed points where we would intervene immediately. Now it’s more difficult to do it through the station’, said Traffic Police spokesman Andrei Codau, according to Romania TV.
Bucharest Deputy Mayor Cornel Pieptea (photo) has also admitted to the fact that the inhabitants of the Capital have a major problem. He blames it all on suspended Mayor Oprescu, currently behind bars.
‘The system stopped working some four months ago. The two data pooling units at Victoriei Square and Unirii Square gave in, and so did the optic fibre that was transmitting the data to the centre and the Unirii sensors. We do not know what caused the breakdown yet. It may be the infrastructure work – some cables were cut, or maybe the rats who chewed the lines. The Street Management should have ordered an assessment from UTI to see what happened. Unfortunately, the former mayor of Bucharest did not deal with the situation’, Pieptea said.
The traffic management system cost 21 million euro and was deployed from 2007 to 2009. It worked on and off until 2014. A significant part of the cost was met by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
The representatives of the People’s Movement Party (PMP) said on Thursday that the situation created was a result of the ‘PSD-PNL deal on the appointment of the interim Mayor of Bucharest, Marian Stefanel Dan’.
‘In order not to lower their chances with their candidates in the local election for the mayor of Bucharest, the two big parties left the Capital and its people in the hands of a person who doesn’t know anything, someone who is totally unprepared for such a position’, the press comment made by Traian Basescu’s party also says.
