Chinese Ambassador seeks strengthened partnerships with Galati municipality and county

Chinese Ambassador to Romania Xu Feihong told a press conference on Friday, after a meeting with local authorities, that he wants partnerships with the city and county of Galati to further strengthen.

At a meeting held at the Galati Prefect’s Office, the Chinese ambassador was given a presentation of Galati County’s economic data, and also of the business opportunities related to the projects the local government plans to implement – the construction of a multimodal port platform, the construction of a tunnel under-crossing the Danube, and the construction of a ring road for Galati city.

Ambassador Xu Feihong said that all the civil engineering business opportunities presented to him in Galati will be referred to the three major Chinese companies that are currently based in Bucharest, adding that he will also forward to Chinese companies the invitation to come to Galati.

Galati City Mayor Marius Stan said the local government would provide an adequate seat for a Chinese consulate, should such a diplomatic representation open in Galati.

The ambassador welcomed the idea, but said that the decision needs to be made at central level and taking in consideration a set of criteria that include the number of Chinese citizens in the area, as well as the size of economic cooperation with Chinese investors.

There are only about 30 Chinese citizens living in Galati and there is no Romanian-Chinese economic partnership in the area, only an academic cooperation between the Lower Danube University of Galati and the Beijing Central Academy of Drama. Galati County has been twinned with China’s Hubei region since 1986, Galati city and Hubei region capital Wuhan have been twinned since 1987, and in 2014 the Galati and Wuhan chambers of commerce signed a memorandum of cooperation.

Before the meeting at the Galati Prefect’s Office, the Chinese official attended the opening of the conference “Days of the Romanian Technical Science Academy,” held at the Faculty of Engineering, and also visited the Museum of History, Culture and Lower Danube Christian Spirituality. His agenda also included a meeting with county officials, a cruise on the Danube and a meeting with the leadership of the Galati-based Maritime Danube Ports Administration.

The Chinese ambassador in Bucharest arrived in Galati in the company of Secretary of State with the Government’s Secretariat-general Costin Mihalache, Agerpres informs.
