Suspended Bucharest mayor Oprescu under guard at diabetes centre

Suspended Bucharest Mayor Sorin Oprescu, under pre-trial detention for corruption, on Friday was admitted under guard at a diabetes specialist centre.

“As regards the person under custody, we specify that he is currently undergoing medical investigations at a diabetes medical center; the investigations are conducted following an inter-hospital transfer decided by specialist doctors. The person under detention was taken to the centre under escort and is now under guard, according to procedures,” reads a release of the Bucharest Police.

Medical sources told AGERPRES that the PET scan investigation Sorin Oprescu should have undergone was postponed until next week because his blood sugar level could not be stabilised.

“The PET scan has been postponed to next week because the blood sugar level could not be stabilized. Until then we must get his glucose levels under control. The procedure says that if the value exceeds a specific value – 150 mg/dL – the PET scan is not allowed because the patient may fall into a coma,” the sources explained.

The former mayor of Bucharest was taken on Thursday to the Bucharest Institute of Oncology for medical investigations, after a lump was detected in one of his lungs.

Oprescu is under pre-trial detention for bribe taking.
