Demography, mirror of living standards

The statistics on births, deaths and marriages registered in July and August this year and presented by the National Statistics Institute (INS) are surprising. Especially in what concerns August, when the number of births (21,051) was the highest in the last 20 months (the earliest date available for INS data). The births were up by 5,151 year-on-year. Since the number of deaths was just 19,277 (close to the one registered in the same months last year), the population grew by 1,774 persons. Each month last year the number of deaths surpassed that of births, so the population dropped each month.
Since positive population growth, albeit small (only 114 persons), was also registered in July, we could say that something positive is happening in the demography domain.
We do not dare say the curve will be inverted in the short term, but something positive is happening.
Also in August, for instance, the number of marriages (22,701) was higher by almost 500 month-on-month but smaller by 1,396 year-on-year.
We cannot talk about a phenomenon, about a trend. However it is undoubtedly a positive event. We are anxiously waiting for the statistics for September. Because demography is an accurate mirror of a population’s living standards, health and education.
