President Iohannis: Modernising agriculture, turning it into growth engine, essential

President Klaus Iohannis says modernising agriculture and reforming it into an engine for economic growth are essential.

“Unfortunately, after 25 years of reform and billions of euros worth of investment, sustainable development is still late to emerge in Romania’s agriculture and countryside. Modernising agriculture and reforming it into an engine for economic growth are essential. To do that we need private initiatives, small industries and family farms, technological upgrading and adequate infrastructure,” Iohannis said in a message on the 145th anniversary of the Cluj-Napoca University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine read out on Thursday by his adviser Ligia Deca.

He underscored that the Cluj-Napoca University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine can have a significant social impact on the developments in the agricultural sector, both nationally and regionally, by training professionals.

He said the infrastructure for exceptional university education and professional practice provides a material base for successful integration with the labour market.

“As continuators of the Higher School of Agriculture of Cluj founded in 1869 you have a tradition that inspires and makes you responsible at the same time. The exceptional results in time of the university’s professors, students and alumni are proof to the importance you attach to research and innovation, a pillar of your activity that in my opinion is also a pillar for the development of a strong Romania,” said Iohannis.

He added that he is convinced the academic community will find trustful partners when it comes to public consultations on education.

“We need a modernist vision, with clear-cut objectives that are quantifiable and long term, as well as concrete measures and a stable legislative framework based on shared principles supported by all those involved in the education system as well as by the entire society. This new vision should be correlated with Romania’s long-term priorities while the recovery of the agriculture sector and smart professionalization in related areas are essential to this desideratum,” Iohannis added in his message.
