General Prosecutor takes over case of policeman dead in outgoing Vice PM Oprea’s motorcade

The case regarding the death of policeman Bogdan Gigina, killed two weeks ago when he plunged with his motorcycle into a huge hole on a capital road, has been taken over by the General Prosecutor.

The inquiry into the case had originally been conducted by the Bucharest Prosecutor’s Office on charges of manslaughter. Bucharest Prosecutor’s press office told Agerpres on Wednesday the move is not about the case not being within its competence, but the General Prosecutor decided to take over the case.

Gigina was killed in a motorcycle crash on the night of Oct. 20; the Capital Police later announced the policeman was part of the vice prime minister’s motorcade.

Oprea was heard by the Capital Prosecutor’s Office as a witness in the case.

“I was exercising my job, I was doing my duty”, Gabriel Oprea (photo), also an Interior Minister in the outgoing Victor Ponta cabinet had said on Oct. 28.
