Liberal co-leader says parties concerned over plans to hold general, local polls on same day

The National Liberal Party’s (PNL) co-leader Alina Gorghiu said on Monday that all party leaders are concerned with plans to hold the general and local elections on the same day, underscoring that the constitution can be modified by the new legislature only.

“Holding the general and local polls on the same day is an idea that gives reason of concern not only to us. I’ve seen that pretty much all the leaders of the political parties are concerned over it, because otherwise we are going to see elections every other year or every year, be they for the European Parliament, local or parliamentary, then presidential polls in four years, then some referendum. Instead of providing social stability, of providing an economic climate that should not be constantly influenced by elections, we waste our energies and resources”, Gorghiu said before a meeting of the PNL National Political Bureau.

She was answering a question about the proposals made in the governing programme put forward by Prime Minister-designate Dacian Ciolos to hold the two polls on the same day and extend the term of all elected officials to five years from the current four.

The PNL co-president insisted the new Parliament will be able to carry out the modification of the constitution. “The modification of the constitution can only be made by the new legislature. We’ve said it is one of the objectives that a new legitimate Parliament can set”, she explained, according to Agerpres.

Gorghiu added the Liberals will insist on electing the mayors in two rounds of voting, arguing “it is about the need of the elected official’s legitimacy”.
